FIR Book Review: The Mobile Mind Shift, by Ted Schadler, Josh Bernoff, and Julie Ask
The Mobile Mind Shift: Engineer Your Business to Win in the Mobile Moment provides the first comprehensive overview of what it takes to develop mobile resources that accommodate the growing expectations of users who increasingly turn first to mobile devices.
FIR co-host Shel Holtz reviews the book written by three Forrester Research analysts: Ted Schadler, technology analyst; Josh Bernoff, senior vice president of Idea Development; and Julie Ask, mobile analyst.
From the book description on Amazon:
“Mobile has reprogrammed your customers’ brains.
“Your customers now turn to their smartphones for everything. What’s tomorrow’s weather? Is the flight on time? Where’s the nearest store, and is this product cheaper there? Whatever the question, the answer is on the phone. This Pavlovian response is the mobile mind shift — the expectation that I can get what I want, anytime, in my immediate context.
“Your new battleground for customers is this mobile moment — the instant in which your customer is seeking an answer. If you’re there for them, they’ll love you; if you’re not, you’ll lose their business. Both entrepreneurial companies like Dropbox and huge corporations like Nestlé are winning in that mobile moment. Are you?
“Based on 200 interviews with entrepreneurs and major companies across the globe, The Mobile Mind Shift is the first book to explain how you can exploit mobile moments.”

Media Bullseye Roundtable joins the FIR Podcast Network
We here at the FIR Podcast Network are excited to announce the latest addition to our lineup of shows: the Media Bullseye Roundtable.
Longtime listeners may remember the Roundtable, which we referenced frequently on The Hobson & Holtz Report. Each week, the show’s host joined a guest co-host to discuss three communication-related stories from the previous week. Guest hosts included thought leaders like Doug Haslam and Bryan Person.
The Roundtable—produced by longtime FIR sponsor CustomScoop—was suspended a couple years back for various reasons, but CustomScoop CEO Chip Griffin has revived it. The first shows of the reborn podcast have included Sarah Santucci of SMS strategies talking about PR spam, social media advertising, and oversight of marketing activities; and Doug Haslam digging into PR data, metrics, and audiences. The first new episode found Chip reunited with former CustomScoop executive Jen Phillips.
Beginning with the episode planned for next Tuesday, July 15, the Roundtable will become part of the FIR Podcast Network. You’ll be able to get it through our “Everything” feed (which delivers every FIR Podcast Network episode to you) or through a dedicated feed just for the Roundtable. It’ll also be available through all the various podcast directories, including iTunes.
We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Chip and the Roundtable to the FIR Podcast Network!

FIR Presents Inside PR 376: A Native Advertising No-No and Panda Preys on News Release Sites
In this episode of Inside PR, Martin Waxman and Joseph Thornley discuss two news-related topics: one newspaper’s reported intent to assign staff reporters to create native advertising; and the impact of Google’s Panda 4.0 algorithm changes on news release sites.
Reporters required to write native advertisements?
First, we give a shout out to Jesse Brown‘s Canada land podcast. In a recent episode, Jesse interviewed Giga Om’s Mathew Ingram about an apparent move by Toronto’s Globe and Mail to require regular reporters to make themselves available to write native advertisements. If you care about the state of journalism, the Canada land podcast is a must-listen.
Panda 4.0 preys on news release sites
Google has never really been happy with the news release and news release services. For some time, Google has advised content creators to put no follow tags in the links in their news releases. They view this as a paid link, not an organic link, and do not want authority to transfer via such paid links. It appears Google decided that voluntary action was not sufficient. Shortly after its Panda 4.0 algorithm changes were implemented, news release sites such as PRWeb, PR Newswire and Business Wire experienced a significant sharp decrease in the traffic they received via search engines.
How are you adjusting your promotion programs to compensate for Google’s moves on the news release sites?

Thought Leadership with Mitchell Levy and Michael Procopio, Episode 29: July 2, 2014
In this episode, Mitchell and Michael interview #ThoughtLeader Lydia Sugarman in what she describes as a 50,000 feet-level conversation. Lydia’s definition of a #ThoughtLeader is someone who can take prevailing tools and ideas and re-work them into something new that better serves people.
Lydia shares her insights about marketing automation and how companies, especially those transitioning from traditional marketing to automation, find the right technologies or tools and use these tools to be successful. In marketing automation, you can have a 360 degree view of the customer that will help you better define their needs and respond to those needs. Relating her point to the Thought Leadership Funnel (http://thinkaha.com/thoughtleadershipfunnel), Lydia points out that marketing automation allows a 360 degree view of customers in real time and enables the company to nurture the customers to becoming advocates.
Lydia notes that some companies or individuals get intimidated by the cost of investing in marketing automation. She cites a recent study that differentiated first-time marketing automation buyers with established marketing automation users. The study found that buyers are cost-conscious and customers are feature-focused. What this means is that companies need to look at marketing automation as a worthwhile investment and it sets the beginning of everything for a company.
The interview touches on the question of choosing the right technology for automation, and here, Lydia points out that technology is not the end-all and be-all because technologies are just tools, relationships are more important. Keep return on relationship in mind vs. return on investment. Another interesting topic discussed was the frequently asked question on whether all employees should be advocates, to which Lydia says that employees should always have the excitement and passion, and knowing that they are making a difference would convert them into advocates.
Mitchell asks, when automation allows a 360 degree view of a customer, how much of the organization should be able to access that view? Lydia gives an interesting response where, technically, not all need to see everything. Marketing, sales, even accounting can have access to that 360 degree view but they need permission to see certain information, and the marketing automation tool should be able to have that feature.
